Expressive Type Design
For this project, I designed a word and additional elements in Illustrator and then created mockups by placing these elements on various objects in Photoshop. Finally, I put everything together in InDesign to create a presentation board.
Ideation Process
I decided to choose the word "Feudal." I created a mind map to help give me an idea of what direction I wanted to go in with my design.
I chose to focus on Norse art, so I started by looking at images of Norse art and type to get an idea of how to emulate it in my design. I also got inspiration from European Medieval art.
Sketches
Next, I created sketches for my word. I ended up liking a lot of my designs, but I chose the dragon one for the final.
Initially, I planned to create a stone dragon with vines growing out of it, but I figured that the piece would become too busy, so I discarded that idea and removed the vines. I also designed some elements of a frame.
Process for Type Design, Additional Elements, and Mockups
Then I transferred my sketch to Illustrator and started tracing over it with the pen tool.
I also began working on the frame while working on the type design.
After I finished my design and extra elements in Illustrator, I moved to Photoshop. I planned to place my design on an axe, but I had a hard time finding a good picture, so I ended putting my designs on swords. I only ended up using one for the final presentation board.
Additional Elements
Initial Designs
I began adding color to the dragon. First, I created a mostly gray dragon with green and turquoise. Then as an experiment I decided to create one that looked like it was made out of gold.
Final Design
I ended up going with an analogous color palette of red, orange, and yellow. I also added my frame and decided not to close it off completely to make the type seem less confined.
Final Mockups

Finally, I put all the elements together in InDesign to create a presentation board.
